A unique place for a School or Group visit!

A visit to the Museum is an experience that gives school pupils a profound insight into the past, and which can stimulate a whole range of issues about past and present health care regimes.

As well as school visits, the Museum has engaged in numerous special Education Projects in the past. Click here to read about some of them in more detail.

**Please Note: The Museum will have no toilet facilities for school groups from February - August 2008 due to building works**

Teachers tell us that few other educational visits compare with the impact the Old Operating Theatre Museum makes. It has:

  • IMMEDIATE IMPACT The Victorian Surgery demonstration makes the past become a vivid reality.
  • RIGHT SIZE The size of the Museum is ideal - not too big to overwhelm the pupil, nor too small to offer sufficient stimulus and diversity.
  • PERSONAL SERVICE Each group gets a dramatic talk, tailored to your exact needs, and given by our enthusiastic and knowledgeable curators. The talks are based around a reconstruction of a 19th Century Operation, or on a series of activities based in the Herb Garret that is a wonderful cross-curricula programme.
  • PROFFESSIONAL SERVICE Our education service is coordinated by our Education Officer and delivered by trained education staff and knowledgeable curators.

SCHOOL VISITS THAT FIT WITH THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM The Museum provides ample opportunities to tie in with the National Curriculum. It is the right place to come to study the 'Medicine through Time' curriculum but also is effective for teaching about the Victorians and local history. The combination of medical science and herbs means it is excellent for all branches of science and numeracy. Take a look at the feedback provided by other schools: What they wrote about us.

MEDICAL VISITS. We have extensive experience of providing a great visit to Medical Groups, including for Operating Theatre Personnel, Nursing and Medical groups. We can combine this with a walk around the remains of Old St. Thomas's and Guy's Hospitals, or with a visit to another of London's many medical museums. Or we can combine it with a walk around historic Bankside. What they wrote about us.

Educational Services

RECONSTRUCTION OF A 19th CENTURY OPERATION

Museum staff will reconstruct the atmosphere of an operation in the time before the discovery of anaesthesia and antiseptic surgery. We have aimed this at the 'Medicine Through Time' curriculum (KS4), although it is also suitable for other age groups.

VICTORIAN HEALTH CARE

This programme is tied into the 'Victorians' Curriculum for keystage 2. It begins with a talk in the Old Operating Theatre in which pupils participate in a reconstruction of a 19th Century operation. The demonstration is carefully considered so as to be appropriate for this age group. The second half of the talk provides an insight into the wider context of health care in the 19th Century.

HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES IN THE HERB GARRET

Hands-on activities in the Herb Garret are led by a member of the curatorial staff, giving an insight into life before the modern age of science and to help give focus to personal, social and heath education in the modern age. Particularly suited to KS1 and KS2 students, the group will learn the history of herbal medicine through a series of activities, including herb grinding in a mortar and pestle, pill-making and poultices. The talk ends with an introduction to the Operating Theatre, and can include a mock operation. Suitable for groups of less than 20, larger groups can be accomodated in two sessions, with worksheets provided for the group not currently engaged in the activities.

KING CHOLERA WALKS!
Public Health In Victorian Southwark

From the herbal medical practices of the Medieval Cathedral through to modern Guy’s Hospital this walk trails the rich and extensive medical history of the London Bridge area. The walker tells of the health, social and working conditions as suffered by the Victorian poor and the mass cholera infection and ‘miasma’ produced by Father Thames. Tales of the London patient from hospital to prison, to the health and survival of the modern organic Borough Market. The perfect complement to a museum visit, the walk illustrates historical topics for all key stages, and is closely tied to the National Curriculum, particularly via "The Victorians" and "Medicine Through Time".

Route includes: The Old Operating Theatre Museum and Herb Garret, Old St Thomas’ Hospital, Southwark Cathedral, the Clink, the Anchor Inn, The Thames, London Bridge, Borough Market, the Hop Exchange, the George Inn, Guy’s Hospital.
