Medical Archives, Medical Records and Medical Ancestors

If you are seeking further information re St. Thomas or Guy’s Hospitals the archives are held at the London Metropolitan Archives.

If you are trying to find a particular Doctor, the records of Doctors trained at the hospitals (and Junior House Doctors) are held at Kings College Archive.

Many of the hospital’s Doctors taught here so it is probably the best place to start looking for a Guy’s or St Thomas’s Doctor. Otherwise try the London Metropolitan Archives.

If you are seeking a nurse, pharmacist or apothecary try the London Metropolitan Archives.

If you are seeking a medical practioner in London, the best bet is to look in Medical Directories. These can be found at the Society of Genealogists or the Guildhall Library.

You might try ‘Tracing Your Medical Ancestors – A guide for Family Historians’ By Michelle Higgs, Barnsley, Pen&Sword Books, 2011

The medical professional bodies may also be of help – many of these are represented on the London Museums of Health and Medicine web page
